Student English Activity (SEA) University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta has an upcoming event called WWW.Kraton.UK. Kraton represents Kraton Yogyakata in Indonesia, UK represents United Kingdom, and WWW (World Wide Web) which is representing Globalization, where in this era both cultures are possible to convene.

The committee will fully cooperate with British Council and Pertamina Pusat Jakarta. Hopefully this event would be done very well because above and beyond, for the instance of the seminar, exhibition, and art & culture performances, we distinguish what Yogyakarta societies want, especially for the students and college students about art and culture.

Occasions :

1. Cultural Seminar ~ June 30th 2007 (Saturday at Ruang Sidang Ahmad Dahlan UMY)

¤ “Local and International Culture featuring Globalization, How to Enrich the Local One without Changing It”. ¤

Extraordinary English Festival (EEF) is an annually program of Department of Speaking. Charity on The Road

After the show was finished at our university (Ahmad Dahlan build. 5^th fl.) we went right away to the street of Mallioboro. With some written papers and an empty box also using some hats, our club and the Dharma Siswa students set up to earn the money for the charity. We gathered in front of the Vrederburg Fort, and divided the team into 3 or 4, some of us went to the people who were sitting on the black stone chairs, or in front of the Post Station Yogya, and others were really down on the street. You can’t imagine… We collected the money from vehicles to vehicles and made everybody on the street stared at all of us, especially at the foreign students.

People were looking at the paper written : “My Name is (e.g. Sabbir) from (e.g. Bangladesh), Bantu Korban Banjir Jabodetabek, Terima Kasih. Brought to you by ; SEA UMY, ESC RRI Semarang, and KangGURU Radio English”. Just look at the picture! Started from 3 – 5 pm., this charity gained more than Rp 200.000,-. We were so happy because we never thought the money would be that much. This charity is dedicated to the “Korban Banjir JABODETABEK”, and the money would be transferred to the MetroTV account especially for those flood victims. We were all tired, but we were all happy because we know that we’d never had such wonderful moment together like this anymore. It was a nice success!

Francesca Campagnoli was visiting our club at January, 14^th 2007. She is studying as M.Sc. in Development Studies from SOAS, University of London, she’s an Italian and has been in Jakarta & Aceh for the past year and half. She knew our club from one of her friend. She was told that our club has a good Debate Team, and she wanted to know about the debate mechanism, the topics, the rules, the teams, and a lot more about debate in Yogyakarta, particularly at our university. Before she went back to her country, she dropped a while at our office and had a little discussion as she's interested in debate with our members. It was nice to know her.. ACITIVITY REPORT

"COMPARATIVE STUDY WITH
ENGLISH SOCIETY CLUB RRI SEMARANG AND GLOBAL ENGLISH CLUB JEPARA"

1. The Departure

Date : Sunday, December 10^th 2006

Time : 07.30 – 11.00 WIB

From about 44 members that have already registered, some of them canceled to join us because they have some business to do, then only 39 members who were going to Semarang. We gathered at the integrated campus of UMY around 6 a.m., but some of us were late to come, so we had to wait for the late members. We were going there by bus which consists of 50 seats. In the schedule we should have gone there at 7 o’clock, but lately we went there by 7.30 a.m. We had so much fun on the way we went there, some of us are singing, some were talked to each other, some played the song, and some were sleeping.

2. The Arrival

After we got there around 11 a.m. Mas Totok, there member of ESC RRI Semarang picked us at Banyumanik Bus Station to accompany us to RRI Semarang. When we arrived at RRI Semarang, the members of both clubs had already arrived first. And we were late, but they were still happy to greet us at time. We also meet Ruth from Australia who joined us as a group of KangGURU Connection Club. After have a little introduction to each others, we prayed Dzuhur at the RRI Musholla and we all went to Lawang Sewu. The members of ESC and GEC were going there by motorcycle but we went there by our bus. They lead us through the way of Semarang to Lawang Sewu. It was such a big convoy and was happy to have a trip with them.

3. Lawang Sewu

Around 1 p.m. we arrived at this place. Lawang Sewu is the most haunted place at Semarang, it was a kind of Museum heritage of the Dutch era. They said this place was haunted by many ghost inside. The name Lawang Sewu means A thousand Doors, it came from the fact that the doors of this building were a thousand too. You may count it by yourself if you didn’t believe it. They said if we like guts challenge, we may like this place because we possibly see the ghost. After talk to the “Pawang” (the guardian of this building), they gave us a little direction and what we should and should not do inside Lawang Sewu. Then we move inside in a group to see the structure of this old bulding, there are so many bats inside and the pile of the bats dung were giving such not a good smell. We also been told about the story of this building and how was the ghost usually appeared in front of us. After going around up and downstairs, we move down to the basement and underground of Lawang Sewu. It was wet, dark, cold and scary chambers we were passing through. Some of us didn’t believe of ghost and some believed of that, but in fact, some of us saw ghosts inside down there. Yes, that was creepy but it made us be more careful in case we would see them again.

We also move to the museum after we got out of the underground. In the two floors museum, we saw hand made pictures displayed inside the building. Displayed on the walls, those pictures were portraits of ghosts that usually had been there for a long time. There were Indonesian ghosts and also Dutch ghosts, and surprisingly we also saw the portrait of the same ghost that some of us saw inside the chamber. While we took a rest outside the building, we talked to the “Juru Kunci” of Lawang Sewu. This very old man was talking about the history of Japanese and Dutch colonialist era, and of course, about the ghosts that he saw around that area.

3. Masjid Agung of Central Java

Before we went to Masjid Agung of Central Java, the members of ESC took us around the old town of Semarang, it was pretty near to the harbor. Around this town we could see the old buildings with the Dutch architecture characteristics, big, bold, white, and still strong. Afterward they took us to Masjid Agung of Central Java, before we got there inside, we were amazed by all the greatness of this Masjid. It was a real big area for a Masjid (mosque), there were food courts, souvenir shops, wide parking lots, huge curved copula above the Masjid, strong architecture with lots of pillars, beautiful water fountains, and a very tall tower on the other side of the venue. After prayed Ashar, some of us were having some afternoon food and some moved to the highest tower of the building. It’s about 19 floors, and we went upstairs by elevator. We can see the whole landscape of Semarang from the top of the tower, they provided us some telescopes for us to see closer to the city. It was such very-very beautiful scenery, windy and so high.

While we take a rest after wandering around the Masjid, we talk to each others, having fun, share pictures, and many more. Next we gather each clubs to share the experiences since we were in Semarang. Before we say goodbye, some us delivered some speech to say thank you for every single thing that we all have done. And SEA gave them some memorials and expressions for ESC. That was the end of the agenda and we were having so much fun. Thank you ESC RRI Semarang and GEC Jepara for giving us a wonderful day. And hopefully this KangGURU Connection Club agenda will brought us as best friends.

4. Go Home

We went home by our bus at 5 pm., even though we were all exhausted, but this nice day gave us a never forgotten story. Just like the common people, most of us were sleep in our seats. Before we got to Yogya again, we stopped awhile to buy some 'oleh-oleh' for our family and friends. We arrived safely in our campus around 7 pm. and we went straighly to our own home and dormitories. Hope to see you again ESC RRI Semarang and GEC Jepara!

1st Movie Discussion (CLICK - Adam Sandlers and Kate Beckingsale)

What a pleasant surprise "Click" turned out to be! Based on the trailer, one can assume that Adam Sandler, playing Michael Newman in his latest movie, has made a movie that is just like Adam Sandler's last movie... and Adam Sandler's movie before that... and the one before that... i.e., the comedy at which you groan, shake your head, say "what the...", and yet can't help from laughing out loud. That's what you get in the first hour of this film. That hour is also as much as the trailer shows, and for good reason.

Director Frank Coraci, who also worked with Adam Sandler in directing The Waterboy and The Wedding Singer, makes excellent use of a technique that should be taken advantage of more often by more directors. He sets us up in the aforementioned first hour of the movie for laughs, and manages to do this quite a few times, and not just with the moments seen in the trailer like other comedies. And, based on one's presupposed knowledge of the typical Adam Sandler movie, one expects there to be a spiral out of control for Michael, a realization of the "right thing to do" and everything to end happily with a monologue and one final punchline, all while remaining light-hearted and humorous. However, having this expectation makes the power and the drama of the movie's second hour so much more heartfelt and emotional. This drama never comes off as forced or unnecessary, because the pacing of the transition between the two utterly different tempos is perfect. Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe, the co-writers of this movie, used a similar technique in "Bruce Almighty", and it worked very effectively there, as well.

There's not much to be said about the ending without the possibility of spoiling it for someone, but suffice to say it accomplishes what it needs to accomplish without making you feel like you've just been cheated.

Far and away the best movie I've seen all year; likely one of the best I have or will seen for many, many years. There's so much more to see in this movie than what the trailer offers. See it... you won't regret it.

Conclusion : From different opinions from some members who attended this agenda, this first Movie Discussion has been supervised and concluded that this is a nice movie to watch. This drama comedy has shown us such a nice philosophy which said “family comes first”. And a scene that touch our heart is when Michael Newman was died, and one thing that we can learn from death is “the thoughts that we could die tomorrow lets us appreciate our life now”. You gotta see this movie!

KGCC Gathering at ESC RRI Semarang
(next December, 10^th 2006)

Hi everybody,

Voila!!

Yeah..yeah..yeah..one and another INFORMATIONS has came here!

So relax and listen up to our announcement.

We are about to tell you that SEA UMY is going to have a club gathering with another KGCC (KangGuru Connection Club) in Semarang which is "ESC RRI Semarang" (KGCC #010) and "GEC Jepara" (KGCC #030) at December 10, 2006. This agenda has been planned by Public Relations Department as the first agenda of 2006 Period. We have already arranged schedules for that acivity. The agenda took place at Jl. Ahmad Yani 144-146 Semarang, near Simpang Lima square. When we get there, we will make kinda comparative study, a little meeting comparing between one and another club to make our club better in the future. And we also want to make a good relationship between each club.

Change Schedule : --> "After that agenda, they will take us around the city then stop by IN SAM POO KONG, the biggest ancient Chinese Temple, they said we can also ask our destiny there." <-- Oops, nope.. we are not going to that place. Keyko (PR of ESC RRI Semarang) said that we should move on to Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah (this Masjid is sssooo....huge!!). YAY! Kinda intersesting!! *(^_^)* Then we can go to Lawang Sewu, see what's inside the underground of that building. It's a scarry and haunted place to visit! I'm sure if we like guts challenge, we maybe love this activity....
